Romans 8:22-25

Scripture Verse

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

Jesus God’s Gift of Hope

Jesus referred to wars, earthquakes and famines as just the beginning of birth pains that would precede his return to earth. Mark 13:8

Paul in a similar way likens the decay of creation and groans of frustration in the world to the pains of childbirth. Something is imminent but the time is not yet ready. We too grown inwardly perhaps as a sign of our deep desire for renewal and change, groans that God hears and interprets as our unspoken prayers. We perceive our world as bruised and decaying, losing its natural resources because of greed for power and wealth. We witness the great suffering of many nations and people but are helpless to offer relief. But we are not without hope. When God stooped down from heaven to earth and became man, hope entered our world. Jesus was God’s gift to mankind, an act of grace. We now live in a world, where God works for all that is worthwhile together with those who love him. We desire to fulfil his purpose for us to grow more like Jesus and enter his heavenly family as heirs. We also are recipients of the first fruits of the Spirit, Christ’s promise to us of future glory and redemption. For this reason, we have hope and wait patiently and eagerly for his return, when all will be fulfilled and he reigns over a new heaven and new earth, where mankind, creatures and nature will live together in harmony. The great work of redemption is completed.

Prayer:

Loving Heavenly Father, help us as we journey through our life to keep our eyes on Jesus, growing in love and gratitude for all the blessings we receive. Lead us by your Spirit, now and always.

In your precious name – Amen
