Route
Rigi Kulm – Rigi Staffel – Unterstetten – Rigi Scheidegg (Routes 571 & 570)
*Overview*
Mount Rigi has attracted visitors for centuries thanks to its exceptional panorama. Queen Victoria and Mark Twain are among the notable visitors. In earlier times, wealthy travelers were carried to the summit in sedan chairs—until 1871, when the first railway reached the top.
Our group will take the train to Rigi Kulm, then walk a short distance up to the TV tower for panoramic views. We will then hike downhill to Rigi Staffel, continue on mostly level terrain to Rigi First, and follow an abandoned railway line from there, gently uphill, all the way to Rigi Scheidegg. Throughout the hike, we’ll enjoy constantly changing views of the surrounding mountains and the valley below.
Most of the route follows a well-prepared winter hiking path. The overall difficulty depends largely on snow conditions in the days leading up to the hike.
*Important*
- There are no restaurants on the second half of the route. Please bring sufficient food and water.
- There is a coffee shop at Rigi Scheidegg where we may stop before taking the cable car down, time permitting.
- The mountain transportation cost is included in the Tageskarte and GIA
*What to bring / wear*
- Winter hiking boots with good traction (especially for downhill sections)
- Walking poles (recommended)
- Layered clothing, warm hat, and gloves
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Food and water
