All Day

In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.

But now you must put them all away.

Colossians 3:7

Put Off
Old Ways

Doomed to fail? Before Christ came into our lives we both sinned and we didn’t worry about it. It was okay and it was fun. We didn’t even see it as sin as it seemed normal. Everyone did it.

Since Christ has come into our lives we have become aware that some things are not okay and therefore less enjoyable. Christ has put this awareness into us, the conviction that sinful behavior is not good, that it is not the will of God. Therefore, we need and want to change. For much of the world, sin is normal; it is even made to seem desirable through today’s marketing and media.

But now you must put them all away... Easier said than done! Each day we are aware that we fail. Multiple times. The fact that we all are still sinning is very frustrating and at times makes us feel spiritually immature. But the desire to grow in the Lord, to mature more and more, to walk more and more in the ways of God is now planted in us. And even though we fail, we shouldn’t lose heart. We might still be immature, sometimes even stubborn, like children, but we are his children and are surrounded by God’s amazing grace and love and taken care of by the most wonderful and forgiving father. We can come to him and lay it all at his feet.

We are not alone; Paul, the super Christian, was in the same boat: I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.

Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.
(Romans 7:15-17, 24-25)

We are not doomed to fail if we know Christ.

“Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.” −John Newton

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for convicting us step by step; thank you for loving us even though we still sin and thank you for being on our side every inch of our path.
