Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality

Colossians 3:5

Put Off
Sexual Immorality

“Sexual immorality is a surrendering of sexual purity. The Greek word is porneia, from where the English word pornography comes, which means the concept of ‘selling off.’ Sexual immorality is the ‘selling off ’ of sexual purity and involves any type of sexual expression outside the boundaries of a biblically defined marriage relationship (Matthew 19:4–5). Sexuality is God’s sacred wedding present to us.” *

Tim Keller once wrote that you cannot break commandments 3-10 without first breaking 1 and 2 and so it is with sexual immorality. “When we have sex outside of God’s regulation of marriage, we sin against our bodies, the temple of the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)  Because pagans had sex in their temples, we are considered idolaters when we defile God’s holy temple by doing things he views as detestable. (1 Corinthians 6: 9-11)” *

Before I came to Christ, I did not believe this. It was my body and I could do what I wanted with it. What was the big deal? Premarital sex? Even the words were so old-fashioned. Everyone was doing it; as a matter of fact, you were seen as square or not cool unless you did. Oh, the lies we hear, believe and tell ourselves!

As a child of the 60’s and 70’s, I grew up in a society of “free” love. No matter how hard my parents tried, culture trumped their teaching by a mile. And I am afraid our current culture has only become more perverse. Sexuality is bought and sold, and personal opinion is the only determiner of right and wrong. Thank God for God!
God and his laws do not change with time or with cultural preferences. (Hebrews 13:8)  His word is forever and is very clear on the matter of sexual immorality. However, we cannot continue to sin. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. (1 John 2:4) Fortunately, Jesus gave his life to redeem us. If we confess our sins and truly repent, we will be forgiven. (1 John 1:9) Hallelujah!

Prayer: Lord God, forgive me when I view your laws as choices rather than timeless and eternal truths. Help me to make my body a holy and living sacrifice to you. In Jesus Christ’s name.  Amen.
