Isaiah 44:1- 8

Do Not Fear

But listen, O Jacob, my servant, Israel, whom I have chosen. This is what the Lord says he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid.…This is what the Lord says Israel's King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last apart from me there is no God.”

These verses which were addressed to Jacob, also called Israel, is also valid to all believers and God's children of all generations. The Lord clearly says, “He who made you, who formed you in the womb and who will help you: Do not be afraid.” The Lord calls us his chosen ones and he knew us all, even before we were born. He knows our weaknesses and one of them is fear. What are we afraid of or afraid about? Our future? Our children? Our family’s future? Fear about our job stability? Fear about our health? Afraid for the world because there are wars everywhere? Or natural calamities and disasters? Or even fear of sharing our beliefs? Are we afraid of being ridiculed or afraid of what others think of us? Or afraid of persecution? This is just to mention a few.

We have so many fears in life, yet the Lord Almighty keeps reminding us to trust him and fear not. It has been said that “fear not“ is mentioned 365 times in the Bible which means one reminder a day. It is, of course, easier said than done. I myself was once under the bondage of fear until the day I attended a church service and for the first time I heard the worship song that says, “I'm no longer a slave to fear, I am a child of God.” Since then, when fear attacks, I sing the song and remind myself “I am a child of God.”

The Lord also says that he is the First and the Last and apart from him there is no God. This clearly means that the Lord should come first in our lives. We are not to have idols — not our spouses, nor our children, nor our families or friends, nor our possessions, nor our jobs, no matter how high the position or the pay.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to trust you completely, free us from any form of fear and help us to recognize any idols in our life that we put before you. In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
