Psalm 19

Complete in Jesus Christ

Just like on those clear days looking down across Lake Zurich when the mountains seem so impossibly close, David also wondered at God’s glory as the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

This natural example of God’s greatness is not what gave him joy. For that, he turned to the Scriptures. David sought the Lord by studying his Word, the Law. There he found wisdom to live by, joy in his soul, light for his eyes, warnings to keep him from stumbling, and an example of righteousness.

This reflection on nature and God’s law leads David to self-examination. He asks to be cleansed from his unobserved faults, and asks God to keep him from deliberately sinning.

When we study the Bible we can expect the same blessings David describes, but for us these are made complete in Jesus Christ. For though the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:17)

It is Christ who gladdens us and lights up our eyes. He is the one who brings us new eternal life and teaches us wisdom. And if the Law is worth more than gold and is sweeter than honey, then Christ is worth more than life itself.

Prayer: Father, keep us far away from the sins we hope to commit, and forgive us for the sins we are too blind to see in ourselves, that we may walk with you and not be ashamed.  Amen.
